Can the iPad Challenge the traditional Workplace Pc?

Since its start in May 2010, the Apple iPad has sold millions of units. But who is buying these devices and why? Well, it appears that the iPad is currently being used at a buyer level and is used for entertainment and media purposes only. The question is for Apple, can this expedient genuinely challenge the traditional Workplace Pc?

Well if we were to wind the clock back say 30 years or so, some of us will remember the Apple Ii, this was the first mass-market personal computer which started the wave of many personal computers. This shook the traditional shop leader of computer manufacturing, Ibm to its core and they knew they had to riposte fast if they were not to lose ground to this new upstart Apple. After outsourcing the micro-processing to Intel and the operating system to Microsoft, Ibm launched their personal computer which grew in popularity in the mid to late eighties and by the start of the nineties many if not most office workers had a personal computer on their desk.

So Ibm won then? Well not exactly, Ibm made a major boo-boo in allowing Intel and Microsoft to sell their products to other associates and competitors such as Dell and Hp who were very victorious in marketing their products and Ibm lost too much ground and at last sold their Pc and laptop company to the China based Lenovo in 2004 and Ibm is now regarded more as a administration consulting company rather than a computer manufacturer.

I know, you are saying what does this have to do with Apple and the iPad? Well as Ibm ended their personal computing business, Apple realised that they can sell their luxury aimed Mac computers at much higher margin than say Dell and Apple understood that the internet has changed personal computing forever. Many people who have bought an iPad and used to ordinarily use a laptop for surfing the web now riposte they use their iPad far more than their traditional laptop.

If this is true in the home, what about the workplace? When combined with growing technologies such as cloud computing and cloud based applications, the Apple iPad is a true contender for the workplace Pc. The iPad had many advantages over and above the traditional office based Pc, the major being the portability of the expedient and working with an iPad with colleagues colse to the desk genuinely promotes team working. Also, the portability of this expedient enables greater home use and the array of the varied iPad Accessories gives this expedient a real change to challenge whether the traditional office based Pc is still relevant in this fast appealing work.
